In order to meet the CRBs seminal aim of protecting the vulnerable there are two levels of checking designed to safeguard jobs or posts that involve working with children or vulnerable adults. These are designated Standard Disclosure and Enhanced Disclosure.
Please note: All Enhanced CRB's processed via Civil and Corporate Security are, without exception, automatically checked against the POVA and POCA lists and List 99.

Types of Disclosure:

|
A Standard Disclosure is a criminal record certificate as defined under Section 113 (3) of the Police Act 1997
It will give:
i the prescribed details of every conviction (including a 'spent'* conviction), caution, warning, and reprimand which is recorded in central records, or it will
ii state that there is no such matter, and where appropriate, iii give details of whether the applicant is banned from working with children
A Standard Disclosure is primarily for positions that involve working, under supervision, with children or regular contact with vulnerable adults. They apply to those providing health services and entering certain professions such as accountancy.
For positions involving 'working with children' it also gives information contained on government department lists comprising people considered unsuitable to work with children. The DfES and DH currently hold these lists.
* A spent conviction referes to those that happened some time ago and normally no longer need to be revealed as specified in the Rehabilitation Act 1974.)

An Enhanced Disclosure is a criminal record certificate as defined under Section 115 (6) of the Police Act 1997
It will give:
i the prescribed details of every conviction (including a 'spent'* conviction), caution, warning, and reprimand which is recorded in central records, and
ii any information which, in the opinion of the chief officer of a relevant police force, might be relevant for the purpose and ought to be included in the certificate, or it will
ii state that there is no such matter, and where appropriate,
iii details of whether the applicant is banned from working with children
An Enhanced Disclosure is for posts involving greater contact with children or vulnerable adults such as a social worker or doctor. Such work might involve regularly caring for, training, supervising or being in sole charge of such people.
Enhanced Disclosures are also issued in respect of other positions such as judicial appointments, and certain statutory licensing purposes. This type of Disclosure involves an extra level of checking with local police force records in addition to checks with the Police National Computer (PNC) and the government department lists held by the DfES and DH, where appropriate.
